Tax Evasion: Should Tax Evaders Get More Severe Punishments?

The government crack down on tax evaders has been a hot topic for the past 8 months. Last September more than 4,000 Americans came forward and filed taxes for money they have been hiding in off shore accounts. As a result, the IRS did not file chargers and even gave them a break on the fines they had to pay. This month the European government has stated it will be targeting middle class tax evaders.

While I can understand the reason for evading taxes, I cannot see why someone would choose to. The money collected from taxes are use to keep our countries running. It is how our roads get fixed, our children get educated, how we get health care, and can afford to protect our people from other countries with evil intent. Can you imagine what would happen if we couldn’t afford to pay for these things? While I am not happy about how the system is designed, taxes are a necessary evil and does a lot of good.

“According to Congressional Republicans, they are in favor of schools, hospitals, libraries, and other public institutions. They just don’t think Americans should pay for them. And, to be fair to these GOP solons, many Americans agree that, although they like their public institutions, they want to avoid picking up the tab.” as posted in the LAProgressive. We don’t want to pay for education, but think we should get it for free. Considering how much we pay in taxes now, I would say we are getting off easy. What would you do if another country attacked us and our government simply did have the money to pay for supplies need to fight back?

In my opinion evading taxes should carry a more severe punishment than what they have in place now. It is abandonment of your country and failing to do your part to insure it’s survival. If you can’t carry water to feed the tree of life, than you should not be allowed to eat from it, that is the way I see it, but this is just my opinion.
